The Escapement the Swiss Said No To: George Daniels and the Co-Axial
In 1999 Omega fitted a genuinely new escapement to a production watch. An Englishman working alone had invented it twenty-five years earlier, and the industry had spent that whole time saying no.

In 1999, Omega did something no watch company had managed in more than two hundred years. It put a genuinely new escapement into a production watch. The escapement did not come from a Swiss research lab or a corporate skunkworks. It was invented a quarter of a century earlier by one Englishman working largely alone, a man who had taught himself the craft from books, who built complete watches with his own hands, and who spent years being politely shown the door by the very industry that would eventually build part of its marketing around his idea. His name was George Daniels, and his story is the most useful thing a collector can study, because it explains what the market is really paying for when it pays for horology.
The boy who taught himself
Daniels was born in London in 1926, into a childhood poor enough that the first watch he ever opened, as a small boy, struck him as a kind of miracle: a whole living universe hidden inside a case. There was no family trade to inherit and no money for a proper apprenticeship. He came to watchmaking the long way, through repair, and made himself into the finest restorer of antique watches in Britain, with a particular authority on the work of Abraham-Louis Breguet. That matters, because Daniels did not learn horology as a set of company procedures. He learned it by taking apart the greatest watches ever made and understanding why they worked. By the time he decided to build his own, he had absorbed two centuries of the craft's best thinking.
Then he did the thing almost no one in the modern era has done. He made watches entirely by himself, by hand, from raw metal. Over his whole career he produced just twenty-three watches. He mastered thirty-two of the thirty-four separate skills required to make a watch from nothing, which is to say he could sit at one bench and produce a finished timepiece with almost no outside help. The industry that surrounded him had spent a century dividing that work among hundreds of specialists and machines. Daniels quietly proved a single person could still hold the entire art in two hands.
An invention two centuries overdue
The mechanical watch has a beating heart called the escapement. It is the part that releases the power of the mainspring in tiny, even beats and keeps time honest. For roughly two hundred and fifty years, nearly every quality watch used a version of the same design, the Swiss lever escapement, and it had one stubborn flaw. Its surfaces slide against each other under pressure, and sliding means friction, and friction means the watch depends heavily on lubricating oil. As that oil degrades, the watch drifts. This is the real reason a mechanical watch needs servicing: not the gears, the oil.
In 1974, Daniels solved it. His co-axial escapement replaced sliding friction with a gentle pushing action across separated planes, so the surfaces meet and part with far less rubbing. Less rubbing means less dependence on oil, which means a watch that holds its accuracy far longer between services. He did not conjure it from nothing. He built on ideas reaching back to Robin, to Breguet, to the American maker Charles Fasoldt, which is exactly how real invention tends to work. But he was the one who made it practical, and he patented it in 1980. It was, by common agreement, the first fundamentally new practical escapement in about two and a half centuries.
The industry said no
You would expect the watch world to have carried Daniels through the streets. It did the opposite. He took his invention to the great Swiss houses, and one after another they declined. The reasons were partly technical and mostly human. Retooling factories around a new escapement is enormously expensive. The lever worked well enough. And there is no comfortable way for a large Swiss institution to admit that the most important horological advance of the century arrived in the coat pocket of a self-taught Englishman who made his watches alone. Innovation is easy to celebrate in a brochure and hard to buy when it means conceding that an outsider saw something you missed.
This is the part of the story we would ask you to sit with, because it is not really about watches. The people best positioned to recognize genius are frequently the people with the most invested in not needing it. Daniels was not turned away because his escapement failed. He was turned away because it worked, and working was inconvenient.
How Omega said yes
The rescue came from the one figure in the industry with both the vision to see it and the power to force it through: Nicolas Hayek, the founder of the Swatch Group, who had already saved Swiss watchmaking once. In the early 1990s the group acquired the technology for Omega, and after years of painstaking industrialization, the co-axial reached production in 1999, in the Omega De Ville. Today it runs in hundreds of thousands of Omega movements a year. An idea that a lone craftsman could barely give away now sits at the mechanical center of one of the largest watch brands on earth.
There is a lesson in the shape of that arc, and it is not a comfortable one for the majors. The breakthrough did not come from scale. Scale bought it, industrialized it, and marketed it, all of which are real achievements. But the seeing came from one person at one bench, and the institutions only moved once a single powerful individual overruled the committee.
What Daniels was really proving
Daniels died in 2011, and his method did not die with him. His protege, Roger W. Smith, spent about twelve years learning to make watches the Daniels way, three and a half of them working directly alongside the master, and now builds them on the Isle of Man in numbers that would make a marketing director weep: roughly ten a year, every part made from raw material, no shortcuts. A watch from that studio carries a waiting list measured in years and a price that reflects the plain arithmetic of one gifted human being and a finite number of days.
The market has ratified all of it. Daniels' own watches now change hands at auction for sums that dwarf almost anything a factory can produce, and they do so for a reason that has nothing to do with hype. They are the physical proof that a single mind mastered the whole art. That is scarcity you cannot manufacture, a story you can explain in two honest sentences, and value that does not depend on a queue psychology that can reverse overnight.
What it means for you
Here is our view, offered as commentary and not as investment advice. The Daniels story is the whole modern market compressed into one biography. At the top, the affluent buyer has stopped paying for the recognized logo and started paying for the informed choice: the object with a hand behind it, the invention the committee missed, the maker whose output is capped by human limits rather than a production plan. That is a more durable kind of status than a waitlist, and a more interesting one.
So learn to see what Daniels saw. When you consider a serious watch, ask what in it could only have come from a person, and what a factory could reproduce tomorrow if it chose to. Learn what an escapement does, because once you understand the co-axial you will never again mistake marketing for mechanism. And treat the independents not as a fashionable corner of the market but as its conscience, the place where the craft keeps proving that one pair of hands still matters. Daniels spent his life proving exactly that, and it took the industry twenty-five years to agree with him. On a long enough horizon, it usually does.
