The Yacht That Could Switch Its Engines Off: Feadship's Savannah
In 2015 a Dutch shipyard launched a superyacht that could run on a single diesel, on batteries, or in near-silence with almost nothing turning. It was the first of its kind, and it changed what owners ask for.

In 2015, the Dutch shipbuilder Feadship launched a yacht that could do something no superyacht her size had done before. She could turn her engines off and keep going. Gliding at anchor or cruising slowly on batteries alone, no diesel running, no generator droning, no exhaust haze on the horizon, she offered a silence that owners of large motor yachts had simply never experienced. Her name was Savannah, and she was the world's first hybrid superyacht. Understanding why that mattered, and why it took a company like Feadship to do it, is a lesson in how real innovation happens in a conservative industry.
The problem nobody talked about
Start with the thing the brochures never dwelt on. A large motor yacht is, mechanically, a floating power station, and for most of yachting history it has been a crude one. Big diesel engines drive the propellers directly, and separate generators run constantly to power the hotel systems, the air conditioning, the lights, the galleys. Even at anchor in a beautiful, quiet bay, a conventional superyacht hums and vibrates with running machinery, and burns fuel doing it. The great irony of the traditional superyacht is that it takes you to the most serene places on earth and then fills them with the low, constant drone of its own engine room.
For decades this was simply accepted as the price of the thing. Engines are what yachts have. Nobody expected silence, because silence seemed impossible at that scale. Savannah was built on the refusal to accept that.
A power station, redesigned
What Feadship did with Savannah, launched from its De Vries yard at over eighty metres, was to rethink the entire way a large yacht makes and uses power. Instead of the usual arrangement of multiple large engines and separate generators, Savannah combined a single, efficient diesel engine with three generators, a large bank of batteries, a single central propeller, and an azimuthing thruster, all wrapped in an unusually streamlined hull. The result was a yacht that could choose how to move. She could run on the diesel directly, or in a diesel-electric mode, or, remarkably, on her batteries alone, in near-total silence.
The batteries were the key, and they did several clever things at once. They let her cruise slowly and silently with almost no machinery running. They allowed her generators to run at their most efficient loading rather than being throttled up and down. And they provided a burst of extra power at the top end when she needed it. The whole system delivered fuel savings of around thirty per cent compared with a conventional yacht of her size, a genuinely large number in an industry where efficiency had rarely been a headline concern. She was, in effect, a floating demonstration that the crude old power arrangement was not the only way, and not even the best way.
Why it had to be Feadship
There is a reason this breakthrough came from Feadship and not from a start-up promising to disrupt yachting. Building the first of anything at this scale is enormously risky. A hybrid propulsion system in an eighty-metre yacht is fantastically complex, and if it fails, it fails in front of a demanding owner who has spent a fortune, in the middle of an ocean, far from help. Only a shipyard with deep engineering credibility and a century of accumulated trust could take that risk and have an owner willing to underwrite it. Feadship had exactly that standing, and it used it to push the whole industry forward rather than simply to build another safe, conventional flagship.
That is how real innovation tends to arrive in conservative fields. Not from outsiders with slogans, but from the most established and trusted players deciding to spend some of their hard-won credibility on a genuine leap. The reputation that lets a great yard charge a premium is the same reputation that lets it attempt something no one has done, because an owner will follow it into the unknown. Feadship spent that trust well.
What it started
Here is our view, offered as commentary rather than advice. Savannah was not a novelty. She was a signpost. In the years since, hybrid and diesel-electric propulsion has moved from an exotic experiment to a serious buying consideration, and several major yards now offer it on their flagship lines. Owners who once thought only about length and interior volume now ask about running costs, about silence at anchor, about the environmental footprint of the thing they are commissioning. Savannah did not just prove the technology worked. She changed the questions owners ask, and once the questions change, the market follows.
That matters for anyone commissioning or buying at this level. The premium for genuine engineering innovation, the silent anchorage, the lower fuel burn, the simpler and cleaner operation, tends to look expensive on the day and sensible a decade later, as the rest of the market catches up and the pioneering examples are remembered as the ones that got there first. The yacht that could turn its engines off looked like an extravagance in 2015. Today it looks like the shape of things to come, arriving early.
The quiet lesson
There is a neat symmetry in the fact that the great innovation of Savannah was, of all things, quiet. The superyacht world had spent decades chasing more: more length, more power, more visible extravagance. Feadship's leap was in the opposite direction, toward less: less noise, less fuel, less machinery running when none needed to. And that turned out to be the more sophisticated ambition, because it required solving a genuinely hard engineering problem rather than simply scaling up an old one. The best kind of progress is often like that. Not louder and bigger, but cleverer and calmer, delivered by the people with the credibility to attempt it and the skill to make it work. Savannah switched off her engines in a silent bay, and the whole industry heard it.
